Fear Factor Club

goldfish3.jpg Another club plan you can use… Fear factor club! It went off without a hitch. We forgot the carrots for the goldfish part but it still was great. Some kids took the extra goldfish home as pets. Wow.

 Enjoy… (Click for pdf)…

What NOW? New Principal at School shuts down Contact Work

IMG_2351 What would you do? At a club with a great history of club, campaigners, school involvement, and weekly on-campus contact work a new principal was hired. The leaders knew lots of teachers, the security guards, and the office staff. They were all familiar with leaders visiting campus. The leaders were trusted, known personally, and had a 10-year track record of working within the guidelines of the school.

Then, in the first week of the new principal the leader walked into the office to get his visitor’s pass. There was a new lady who was at the front desk who said, “Who are you and why should you be here?” Turns out that leaders are not allowed on campus anymore. The vice-principal vouched for the leaders, but apparently the new people simply do not want the leaders on campus.

What would you do?

Text messages – Bulk Text Program for Treo

text_messaging.jpgEveryones doin’ it! They are text messaging. No big surprise, sorry. Lots of you might already have a flip phone, a Blackberry, a Motorola Brick, and some of you might even have an iPhone, but I know a lot of you have a Treo. I do.

For the last year or so I have been using a group or bulk text messaging program with my Treo 650 and then Treo 700

(they replaced the 650 when I dropped it… oops). It is fantastic. I have several groups, my club team, the other leaders in my area, my campaigner group. But best of all, a group called “Monday”. I text all my kids on Monday in about 30 seconds. BTW, here are a couple tips for texting…

  1. Try to keep it guys-to-guys, girls-to-girls… I’m sure you learned that in training.
  2. Use abbreviations, they do. So should u.
  3. At the end ask a brief question so you can interact with them either knowing if they are coming, what’s going on, or simply to just know they got the text.
  4. Within reason it is a good idea to text them while at school, maybe during lunch (don’t get them in trouble in class), so they can spread the news.
  5. Don’t text too much to kids who stop coming… it can be annoying.

treo-700p.jpgAnyway, here is the link to the file. Another leader uses it and it works pretty good for him. About 5% of the time it doesn’t work though. Overall it is a great tool.

Theology Thud – Trinity (Part 2)

2. Further revealed in the NT

All Three Spoken of Together

Matthew 3:16-17 (NIV) 16As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.

17And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

Matthew 28:19 (NIV) 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

2 Corinthians 13:14 (NIV) 14May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Ephesians 4:4-6 (NIV) 4There is one body and one Spirit— just as you were called to one hope when you were called—

5one Lord, one faith, one baptism;

6one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Theology Thud – Trinity (Part 1)

1. Partially revealed in the OT

Plurality

Genesis 1:26 (NIV) 26Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

Genesis 3:22 (NIV) 22And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”

Isaiah 6:8 (NIV) 8Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

            God talking to another God

Psalm 45:6-7 (NIV) 6Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.

7You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.

Psalm 110:1 (NIV) 1Of David. A psalm. The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”

Campaigners Chaos – Getting them to talk: Faces Handout

4-faces.jpgSometimes you need to mix it up for campaigners. Here’s an idea:

Use the attached “faces” handout (one of those sheets with different emotions on faces…) and ask your campaigners any of these questions:

Personally

  1. How do you feel today?
  2. How does your relationship with your parents feel right now?
  3. How do you hope to feel next week?
  4. Close your eyes and point at one face, describe a time when you felt that way…

With God

  1. How do you feel about Jesus right now?
  2. How do you think Jesus feels about you right now?

Vision for Club

  1. How do most people at your school feel about God?
  2. How do most people feel about Young Life
  3. Which face seems least likey to become a Christian? Name a person at your school who is like that. Pray for them.

Fun

  1. Which one looks most like your YL leader?
  2. Have a contest to see who can make the best imitation faces on the sheet.

Obviously there are thousands of ways to tweak this. This can be especially helpful for getting guys to talk or to talk about their feelings.

Everyones Doin’ It – Wearin’ Cool Belts

OK, this might be old news for some of you, but belts are important these days. They are a fashion statement a way to show some style. In case you wear a belt like this:

plain-belt.jpg

You may want to consider an upgrade… everyones doin’ it.

This is your standard studded belt. Pretty much every 16 year old boy has at least one of these.

stud-belt.jpg

I wasn’t a big fan of the studded one. So I decided to go with this one. My club kids helped me pick it out at Pac Sun.

oneil-belt.jpg

It is a little more interesting than the studded one. Also it is a neutral color so I can wear it with a lot of clothes, which is good because I only plan on buying one “cool” belt. It is too expensive to buy “cool” stuff all the time.

Do you have a cool belt? If you are under 25 you probably already have a couple. If you are 25-25 you should get one. If you are over 35 it might look like you are trying too hard to fit in.
