Help for Young Life Leaders NOW

Here are 5 new games for club that might be new to you:

1. Fly Swatter Fencing
Not sure if this is on the site, but it should be. Buy two fly swatters from the dollar store. Two people. Stand facing each other with swatters extended. The goal is to hit the other person with the fly swatter, and after each hit you line up again. First one with three hits win. This game can be greatly enhanced with football helmets, hockey gloves, fencing uniforms (?), and a strobe light.

2. “Cotton Ball and Bad Breath” (you’ll see why)
Like the cotton ball competition everyone has vaseline on their nose and then a cotton ball sticking to the vaseline. The object of the game is to blow everyone else’s cotton ball off thier nose (without using any limbs or body parts) while keeping your cotton ball on your own nose. It’s really fun, try it out!

3. Ice Weight Gain
As part of an Olympics series this year, we played a new game we called “Ice Weight Gain” that turned out to be quite hysterical. people. One person on each team puts on a large pair of sweat pants and then you have a ‘”weigh-in.” Each team has 1 or 2 minutes to see how many pounds of ice they can drop into the sweat pants using only bare hands, one hand at a time.

4. Egg Blow
Use a funnel to put egg into half-inch clear plastic tubing. Two kids standing five feet apart try to blow into opponent’s mouth. Leader must hold tube so kids don’t blow egg into crowd.

5. Gummi Fish

Show guys two cups with live goldfish and two with just water. Blindfold them and replace the goldfish with cups that have gummi fish in the water. Have the guys choose a cup and then drink. They’ll think they are drinking a real fish. ** You should coat the cups with a little oil or Pam so the gummi fish don’t stick to the cup (Tip from Hugh - thanks!)

OK, I’m no fashion genius. I still own a pair of Birkenstocks, they are rather comfy. But I do spend a lot of time around high school folk and I notice things. One thing I notice is that they like to text, listen to ipods and cuss a lot. But that isn’t what this post is about. This post is about fashion.

Neon is an up-and-coming color for shirts these days. Also simple geometric designs or simple lines. Simply take a nice soft shirt, draw some lines or things you can do in Microsoft Word or even that "Paint" program that came in the 386 computers, add some neon colors and BANG… Instant cool. Add a YL logo and BANG… Camp t-shirt.

Maybe we should have turntables at club..? Here are my reasons:

1. COOL - They are cool.
2. INTRIGUE - Most kids have never seen one but hear it everyday.
3. RETHINK - It will help us rethink the kind of music we do in club (wisdom needed since much of hip hop is scandalous. See HERE if you need an example.)
4. UNIVERSAL APPEAL - Hip hop music is universal. More universal than “oldies” and much more universal than “top 40″ songs we work into club every now and again.
5. SKILLS - Chances are, no one you know uses a turntable, so with some practice, you are the best spinner anyone has ever met. Also it might work for people who simply can’t learn guitar.

I have seen turntables in YL clubs. Over 10 years ago I helped out an urban club. I played 2-3 songs on the guitar, but they had a DJ spin tracks inbetween skits and transitions. Also in November, the music team at weekend camp had a DJ. Imagine Brown Eyed Girl with scratchin’, yes they did it.

I gotta be honest, I’ve never tried it. But being somewhat musical I think I’ll give it a try. One of the leaders today said a friend has one we can borrow. Any tips would be appreciated.

P.S. I’ve been a high school basketball coach for 6 years now and pretty much none of them like club. This might appeal to my basketball guys who think life, basketball and rap are all the same thing. Efrem Smith got me thinking about this at ASC08.

Each person is fully God

Rave! Yes! Glow sticks, techno music, black lights! Lots of fun. This is a club that can be quite a bit different than the normal club. We order glowsticks online, we got them HERE, but you can get them HERE too. We also borrowed a black light. A strobe light is also key.

We even tried to sing club songs over a techno beat. That only worked for one song, then we reverted back to guitar. But it was really fun trying and the kids saw that we were willing to try new things - we laughed a lot.

God is three separate persons

Here is a simple handout you can use for Campaigners. It is basically the section on love in 1 Corinthians broken down for reflection. I used it and it provoked some interesting questions, especially the “not” statements.

So tonight we did Pizza club. Not Pizza Olympics, we’ll do that one later. This was just a pizza theme. Psychic Bambi was hilarious, so was smell, touch, taste.

One of the things I did in the talk was to show a picture of Jesus out of focus and then I focused it as an illustration of getting a more accurate picture of Jesus at YL.
