Balancing Relationships

At our most recent All Area Leadership meeting, one of our fantastic volunteer team leaders, Alex Devine, did a great lesson on how to balance relationships in YL. He used an approach that has been around for a while but continues to help frame a well-rounded approach to relationships in YL. I first heard of this approach from my friend Rick Wilson as the “circles of three”.

In this model you have three circles and at least three names in each circle. The three circles are 1) Contact Work, or kids who don’t yet go to club, 2) Club, meaning kids who go to club but not much more yet, and 3) Campaigner kids. If you can maintain a focus on at least three people in each circle, you will likely have a good, well-rounded, approach to outreach, gospel proclamation, and intentional discipleship (though all three of those terms have overlap themselves). Young Life – YL Club

image This might sound confusing, but follow along… last week we did Young Life, Young Life club. So basically a club with a “theme” of “Young Life”. We did this near the beginning of the semester to somewhat introduce some of the newer kids to a little intro to YL. We asked kids to come in any YL gear they might have. I also save up random leftovers from previous camps and such and gave them away during club, especially to the newer kids. We also had some of our junior leaders do the “If I Weren’t In YL…” skit.

Here is our plan and also the video of the skit.

Semester Club Talk Plan for the Gospel of John

image A few weeks ago I mentioned that our YL region is focusing on the book of John for the entire year. Club, campaigners, leader meetings, region meetings, devotionals, as much as possible. I have written before how much I like going through the gospels in club for talks and campaigners. I know at least one club that is now going through the seven “I am” statements in John for club this semester.

Wear Your YL Shirt to School Day

image This is just plain cool. A senior in high school made a Facebook event to get his friends to all wear their YL shirts on the same day. Well, it caught on to say the least. When I last checked, 23,000+ people have “accepted” the invite to attend.

What other creative ways have you seen Facebook or other social media used to create momentum for things related to YL?
