Pumpkin Smash Club

This may be a little too late to use with pumpkins, but you can file this away for next October/November, or it might bring to mind a similar creative idea to do with kids.

Erin from Silicon Valley YL sent me this idea and said this…

“We got a few hundred pumpkins the day after Halloween for super cheap. We had a huge “Pumpkin Bash”! …I would recommend something like this to anyone working with Middle Schoolers (as long as they have a good team of leaders!)”

Breakfast Club

Here is the club we are doing tonight. We will have different kinds of cereal out when kids can arrive to make their own bowl of cereal. Kids are dressing up in PJs. We also might have on some cartoons. We’ll see how it goes!

Minute To Win It – Part 1

Ever since I saw the commercials for the new show Minute To Win It on NBC, I knew it would be great for YL ideas. My friend Dan made a great discovery… Over 70 clips are available on Hulu.com that explain the games. Only problem… I don’t have time to review 70 clips. So I thought I’d embed them a few at a time and let you all make comments to help morph these into club games.

So have at it… watch the clips and try to come up with a detailed game that could work in club, complete with supplies needed, how many people are needed, how to explain, how to win, etc.

March Madness Club

OK my Sun Devils got snubbed and missed out on the big dance. I know they were a bubble team but oh well. At least they are a #1 seed in the NIT. Did I mention that our arch-rivals at the University of Arizona missed the tournament for the first time 25 years… and didn’t even get invited to the NIT. They got invited to some tournament lower then that and then turned it down. That makes me feel a little better.

So back to my club plans. Tonight we are doing March Madness club. We are going to have tournament brackets that kids can fill out and then we will post them in our club room for the next few weeks. Should be fun.

Lots of Club Plans from YL Canada!

My friend Doug from YL Vancouver Island has contributed to YLHelp in the past and has sent me even more great stuff to share.

Below are his club plans from last semester and the coming semester. He said that the plans are based around a G6-8 (WyldLife) club with notes on the side for the high school club. The talks have the same content for both clubs.

There is a lot of good info and some ideas for talks with scriptures included. His plans include some of his team’s key ideas for the semester and even some thoughts on dealing with behavior issues. Thanks a ton Dougie!

I’m so thankful that I’m getting more and more emails and suggestions from all of you out there! You are all really helping everyone out a ton. Including my clubs!

Patrick from Wooster, Ohio sent me his plans from last semester. They include song selections too. I recognize pretty much all the games and mixers, but not everything on the list. If you have questions, I recommend looking at YLPlaybook or asking the comments section. Maybe Patrick can chime in as needed.

Jersey Shore Club… Not Gonna Do It

During our leadership club planning brainstorming meeting we came up with a ton of fun ideas. As you can tell, we have a lot of theme clubs, which the students really enjoy. Sometimes the themes having something to do with current events (i.e. Super Bowl Club, Olympics Club, Prom Club, etc.), other times they have to do with things the kids are into (i.e. Harry Potter Club, Jerk Club), and other times they really don’t have any relevance (i.e. Yellow Club, Bubblewrap Club).

For a long time I have observed that YL leaders often don’t have to “read up” much on youth culture or scour the web or magazines to see what is “hot”. The good YL leader already knows because of our front-line involvement. In fact we could probably be reporters for all those websites and magazines if we needed some extra money. I will add that we can learn much from other people’s helpful analysis.

So back to the story… One of the ideas that our leaders brainstormed was to do “Jersey Shore Club”. If you work with kids, you know what that show is all about. At first glance it could be fun and honestly I bet it would be a huge hit. The games would be a crack-up and the skits would be easy. I thought the guys would have fun grease-ing up their hair and wearing tight shirts. Then I started to think about how the girls would dress and what kind of attitude they would adopt for the club. That instantly killed the idea in my mind.

In my application of the YL club as a tool, it occasionally straddles the line of “should we really do that”? In my 15+ years of YL I have made numerous mistakes with things I’ve tried and I feel like I have struck a good balance of “edgy” and “above-reproach”. Maybe there is a way to use this idea in a way that makes sense, like in a skit or program that mocks the whole thing. But in our club a lot of kids dress up and play up the whole idea of whatever it is we are doing. So it is a no-brainer. Just like the old SNL skits says… not gonna do it.

How do you decide where the line is? What lessons have you learned?

Olympics Club

The Olympics have always been a strong theme in YL. I’ve seen plenty of programs at camp utilize this theme. One of my favorite was “Speed and Power”. Speed was an overweight guy and Power was a super skinny guy. Gotta love that. I remember my first club skit in high school was me running through the crowd with a fake Olympic torch before every club game in a toga.

All that to say, we are doing Olympic Club and I thought I’d pass along our plans. Enjoy!
