For my first 6 years of leading we did not do themes. We had great clubs then so I don't think it is a necessity. But for the last 8 or so years we have done themes for club in my area. It actually makes the planning easier and allows for some more creativity, plus the kids often look forward to the themes and it gives them something to talk about at school.
